Mac OS 7.6.1

Mac OS 7.6.1, otherwise known as System 7.6.1, came out a few months after Mac OS 7.6. It was a system update that was, mainly, a collection of bug fixes.

In addition, QuickTime movies -- especialy large ones -- now play better. Infrared woes on the PowerBook 1400s and PowerBook 3400s were gone. 5400- and 6400-series desktops had their printing speedbumped, and new versions of Apple System Profiler, AppleVision monitor software, and the Apple Video Player were included.

Mac OS 7.6.1 removed a host of obscure patch files and integrated them into the OS. Amongst those include:

• 7.5.5 SCSI Server
• Assistant Toolbox
• PCI Network Legacy
• PowerBook 1400 ATA
• PowerBook 1400 PMU Updater
• PowerBook VM Tuner for OS 7.6
• PowerMac Format Patch
• PowerPC Interrupt Extension

Mac OS 7.6.1 finally ended, after 13 released updates, up to 3 Tune-Ups, 2 model-specific updates, 3 revisions, one cancelled update, and 8 Performa-only updates, the System 7 era, which lasted the better part of 6 full years. As of 2005, the Mac OS X era is still two years behind in equating or surpassing it.

(The existance of the succeeding Mac OS 7.6.3 is still disputed and has not been included in the enumeration above.)
