[edit] History
At first personal computers were considered "hobby" items. Enthusiasts built their own from kits. Later, especially once the early spreadsheets became available, companies began using them in offices. They were single user or "personal" computers as opposed to the mainframe, multi-user computers that were more prevalent at the time. Later as prices came down, commercially built personal computers became for affordable for home use.
